Arthur Russell

I'm always curious about finding new music, specially new music that is out of the box and out of context. Every once in a wile I am lucky to find artist that fit this profile. This is the case with Arthur Russel whom I recently discovered through a Spotify accident, clicking on the wrong artist and starting to listen to the wrong song.
I realized this guy was in a constant search for himself through sound and lyrics, always changing the route of his sound ship and surprising the listeners. There is a wonderful documentary on his life and work titled "Wild Combination" which I do recommend. Put your ears on some of his albums they are almost meant to be heard in solitude, specialy his cello and voice works "Another Thought", here is a sample of his song "A Sudden Chill"

Visit him on wikipedia
or his label's website Audika

Minimal music

I have a profound connection with minimal music, due to many reasons, probably the first is because I was brought up in a country whose roots are directly linked to Africa, one of the mother lands of repetitive music. Another reason why I probably like repetitive or minimal music is simply because our lives are totally based on repetitive rituals (work, love, eat, etc), and through those continuous patterns we can learn, grow, find joy or simply destroy.

When we LOVE someone or something, we carry the idea that we have transcended our flesh through that interaction, and of course we need to repeat that ritual in order to arrive at that same or a much better place. A TRANCE is one of those states that repetition can take us to.

I have made a short youtube playlist of some minimal music, ranging from Dominican Music, to Philip Glass, Bach's repetitive Brandenburg Concerto, Ali Farka Toure, and some pop music.

Enjoy

Leo Kottke

Lovely album by Leo Kottke. I have to admit that I just discovered it, though it is a classic. He has a wonderful guitar sound, his music is aggressive its like Heavy Metal on a 12 string guitar.

Enjoy
